The City of Hopkinsville is governed by a mayor and 12 city council members who are elected by wards to two-year terms. City government operates under four departments: Administration, Fire and EMS, Police and Public Works.

 The Christian County Fiscal Court, or governing body, is composed of a County Judge Executive and eight district magistrates who are elected to four-year terms. The Judge Executive, as the chief executive officer of the county, is responsible for the organization and management of the administrative functions of county government. The Fiscal Court sets the county's policies and priorities. The Judge Executive must execute these policies and priorities. The Fiscal Court oversees the operation of 17 departments/service areas.
